Strong, healthy families are at the core of our goals and values. Zach’s Place at The Laurie Hillyard Family Center offers specialized child and respite care for youth with disabilities. We provide the break and support that parents need, while giving the child a chance to fun and challenging activities in a learning environment. Home-based care, sessions for siblings, parent networking groups and puppets who teach others about disabilities are all part of the Children & Family Services.
A Note from the Program Director, Renae Isakson:
“At Zach’s Place program we seek to strengthen families by providing quality respite care in a nurturing environment, whether for a day, overnight, or weekend. We also help children achieve their greatest level of independence through life skills training. Hearing and seeing what our families go through on a daily basis, and being able to offer continuing support makes my job a real joy. The youth are extraordinary and fill our days with enjoyment. Everyone can use help and we are able to offer the help and support that is vital to our community.”

Zach’s Place opened its doors in 1999 to provide families in the Colorado Springs and surrounding areas a safe place for respite care for parents to entrust their child(ren) between 2 – 21 years of age with disabilities and their siblings without regard to race, religion, or ethnicity.
In November 2015, we officially named the facility Zach’s Place at The Laurie Hillyard Family Center. The facilities’ new name is in honor of Laurie Hillyard, a woman with a disability who is loved and cherished by her family, the descendants of the Helen K. and Arthur E. Johnson Foundation founders.
